The leading workforce development professional in San Antonio is moving to Austin. In his departure speech, he made some interesting points about the challenges facing San Antonio. His comments, however, apply more broadly to most regions. Here is an exceprt from the article:
"Parents, high school principals and counselors...point all students toward obtaining four-year degrees.
"'But most high graduates do not go to college. Of those who do, better than 50 percent don't get degrees,' Miller said. Meanwhile, seats in certificate and associate degree programs go unfilled, leaving employers with small pools of workers to chose from."
Some Background on EDPro Weblog
The purpose of this weblog is to help economic development professionals -- EDPros -- keep up with the changes sweeping our profession. Strap on your goggles. It's a whole new game. There are no experts any more. The only place to learn about economic development is from other EDPros who are doing it.
One other point: the prevaling approach (paradigm, if you like) in economic development is shifting from competition to collaboration. There are a lot of reaasons underlying this shift, but here's the important insight: You, your community, and your region will do better by collaborating and sharing information.
