Learn more Today in our history of innovation... Today marks the birthday of the fast food restaurant. In 1902, the Automat Restaurant opened in Philadelphia. The restaurant offered vending machine service. Later, Horn & Hardhart expanded the concept into a chain of Automats, America’s first major fast-food chain. Customers put nickels into slots in the Automats and turned a knob.
