Denver's mayor gives some good insights into stadiums as economic development engines.

One quote: "Given the condition of our schools, it's somewhat galling the amount of money we spend for stadiums." Read more.

P.S.: The Thing Theory of economic development is dead. (The Thing Theory holds that if you build a really Big Thing -- stadiums, convention centers, and casinos -- you will create economic development.) Today, brainpower and innovation networks drive economic development.
