Here's a good commentary on why unique places are important to economic development these days. Smart people can locate anywhere. They will choose to live in places that offer unique, connected experiences.

In the past, economic development took place along side, but separate from, physical development. Increasingly, however, we are seeing that physical planning is a critical component to building a competitive community.
